The brother of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has a habit of getting involved in his sibling’s business. It’s annoying on occasion, but one has to agree with his recent conclusion that Aubameyang should be in a traditional striker’s role as opposed to that of a winger.
Willy Aubameyang recently took to Instagram to show his displeasure with Arteta’s decision to play his brother out wide. He was reported to have said:
“I don’t understand. I don’t like when he plays on the left.”
“I like when he plays striker.”
“But I like him [Arteta]. He’s good. He has, you know, character.”
As I suggested just recently, PEM and Arsenal would certainly benefit from him in the Henry role, where he is given artistic license around/inside the box and on the flanks, should he choose to go out wide. That’s just a reasonable request based on observations but the only problem with that suggestion is that Henry had the benefit of a group of players around him that were at another level.
There is No Pires, No Bergkamp, No Reyes, No Vieira, or Ljungberg. In fact, the majority of the time Aubameyang has been put on the flank to accommodate a partnership with Alexandre Lacazette. That hasn’t been a complete success and the service that both have received since their arrivals has been inconsistent and poor.
They have had to scavenge and improvise on occasion or rely on their inherent instincts to fashion goals but perhaps, if Aubameyang extends his contract, Arteta can find a way to provide him with a roaming striker’s role and a few players of the same class.
To his credit, Aubameyang never complains about being played on the wing and not in a striker’s role, his body posture suggests someone happy with his life in North London and he portrays a player content with his performances, gifts, and goals.
Next season may prove to be his best yet, as Arteta shuffles the pack to bring in up to three fresh faces. The side will become one of flair, experience, durability, and youth which could see Arsenal’s hitman become the outright winner of the Premier League golden boot.

Arteta will have spoken with Aubameyang about his vision for the future as part of the enticement and wooing process which, it’s hoped, will see him remain at the club. It’s no secret that Arteta knows that his captain could deliver more goals and that the club needs to provide him with more opportunities from better players.
First, Aubameyang has to extend his stay and we’ll soon know if he is to continue to chase down club records and become a legend at Arsenal.
