According to several reports, Premier League giants Manchester United are weighing up a move for Raul de Tomas in the 2022 summer transfer window. The Red Devils are in talks to sign the Espanyol forward as a replacement for wantaway star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Manchester United are keen and widely expected to sign a new forward before the end of this transfer window, and The Sun claims that the 27-year-old attacker is on Erik ten Hag’s transfer wishlist, who could serve as an alternative for Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils had an awful start to their 2022-23 Premier League campaign. They suffered back-to-back defeats against Brentford, leaving them at the bottom of the table. United have managed to get wins in the last 2 matches against Liverpool and Southampton, but the Manchester club do look short on personnel up-front.
Thus, the club is believed to be on a hunt for a number of new additions that would bolster the attack, with Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauro Icardi also said to be in the sights of the club.
United legend Ronaldo certainly does not favour playing in the Europa League and is quite desperate to quit the club. Hence, Ten Hag is exploring his attacking options and has identified Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas as his summer target. The top hierarchy at United is also believed to have “open negotiations” with Espanyol over the transfer of their talented forward.

The Spanish international saw himself play for a number of clubs before ing Benfica in 2019. However, he failed to make his mark with the Portuguese side and returned to Spain’s top flight with Espanyol in 2020. De Tomas has ed 45 goals in a total of 89 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) for the Catalan side in all competitions, including 17 goals and 3 assists in 36 matches (stats via Transfermarkt) during the 2021-22 season.

Speaking to La Grada (via SportsMole) Espanyol’s CEO Mao Ye said:
“There are days left in the market. And there are always possibilities. But we have him in our squad.”
With the ongoing speculation over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future, it appears that De Tomas is the man Ten Hag would likely prefer as his new striker for the remainder of the season. With the Spanish centre-forward being available on the transfer market, United have been alerted about the player’s availability – and is hoping to sign him before the end of the transfer window.
