According to Manchester Evening News, Argentinian shot-stopper Sergio Romero could make a shock return to Manchester United this summer, with the player interested in moving back to the club just one year after having left the Red Devils.

Having been relegated with Serie A side Venezia, the 35-year-old keeper is currently a free agent, with United likely to explore the option of re-g him as they look to acquire a backup goalkeeper this summer.

While the Red Devils are yet to a formal interest in re-g Romero, the imminent loan departure of Dean Henderson has opened up an opportunity for the Argentinian’s return, who is said to still retain an iration for the club alongside being open to a comeback this summer.

Having spent six years at Old Trafford – making 61 appearances – the 35-year-old established himself as a notable understudy to David De Gea, mainly featuring in cup games and Europa League fixtures, ing 39 clean sheets during his time at Old Trafford (stats via transfermarkt).

The Argentinian, however, failed to a single appearance for United during his final season at the club, after being frozen out by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Romero made his final appearance for United against FC Copenhagen during their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie in August 2020 but was reportedly disappointed after being left out of the starting XI in the semi-final loss against Sevilla.

Sergio Romero was said to have demanded a transfer to Everton the following summer before United turned down the move, eventually resulting in the player deciding to run down his contract. Often forced to train alone during his final season at Old Trafford, the 35-year-old found himself replaced by returning loanee Dean Henderson at the time. Despite his controversial exit, the F.A Cup, League Cup, and Europa League winner could make a surprising return to Old Trafford, with Ten Hag likely to ire the 35-year-old’s presence.

With the Red Devils yet to acquire a backup goalkeeper following a break-down in talks with Watford’s Daniel Bachmann earlier this month, Sergio Romero emerges as a tempting option for the club.

Moreover, with Tom Heaton emerging as the only backup goalkeeper with senior team experience left within the set-up, Ten Hag could demand additional competition in the position as the Red Devils prepare for a challenging July ahead of the commencement of the 2022/23 campaign.
