It’s been a strange way of doing things but it’s all been very Arsenal. Firstly they made a hash the whole Sven Mislintat era. No doubt promising ‘diamond eye’ plenty but in less than a year, he realised that the direction Arsenal were heading in was at odds with his own reputation.
Sven was a caviar ‘kind of guy’ and Arsenal wanted him to be a bit more mushy peas. Mislintat thought he would be able to cover the globe and secure the services of the next generation of stars but in truth he was there for purposes of credibility and to watch the under 18’s on a wet lumpy pitch in Norwich.
That situation ended incredibly poorly and so began the search for a technical director, a title that Arsenal wouldn’t afford the rogue German during his stay.
Overmars and Monchi subsequently laughed themselves silly when approached and it became obvious that the former Arsenal midfielder and ‘invincible’ Edu was in pole position for the role. Edu was being employed to apparently ‘sharpen up’ the recruitment processes on a reduced budget.
Umm, but then Edu failed to materialise until July and couldn’t even make the return to pre season training because of prior commitments with the Brazilian team.
Nice to see a proper Arsenal man up there at the top level.

Incidentally, we shouldn’t forget that the Copa America is first trophy Brazil have won in 12 years and Edu was general coordinator, which, let’s be honest, looks good on a CV.
However, instead of agreeing a strategy that wouldn’t damage the relationship between the newly appointed TD in the form of Edu and the board in his absence, the hierarchy decided to fold their arms, twiddle their thumbs and wait.
This may all be a clever smokescreen that has allowed Edu to work wonders during the Copa America without the constant glare of the media or it could be just another typical half arsed Arsenal operation, that smacks of desperation and lack of leadership.
On his appointment, Edu said,
“Arsenal has always had a special place in my heart and I’m thrilled to be returning to this great club.”
he added,
“We have a strong squad and some very talented young players with fantastic people at every level. I’m looking forward to helping make a difference.”

Hiring a technical director can prove to become a smart move and giving that position to a former Arsenal player who loves the club and respects its values might prove to be a cherry on the top for the Gunners. Appointing Edu might turn out to be a game changer and will compliment well with Freddie as an assistant coach.
