Since Emery left and Arteta took over, the Arsenal hierarchy have had the opportunity to take a long, hard look at the current season of disappointment and examine their obvious mistakes during that period.
It’s inconceivable that the Arsenal board had even contemplated not spending given the performances and blatant weaknesses. They might have got away with their frugal ways under Wenger but in the current climate, the Emirates’ big wigs will find themselves on thin ice if they take no immediate action.
Arsenal ers around the world would never tolerate relegation at the hands of their number one figure of hate, Stan Kroenke. For the owner of Arsenal to claim that the club was unable to spend money to avoid the devastating consequences of further decline would let all hell break loose.
Arsenal are a money making machine that attracts huge sums of revenue, sponsorships and endorsements, but without top flight football they could quite easily fall off the sporting map. It’s simply a case of common sense to suggest that Arsenal invest a little more to prevent massive shortfalls in the future, especially because they refused to provide the necessary funds for so long.
The Mirror recently claimed there had been a U-turn in Arsenal’s position on the transfer market and to a degree that may be partially true in some quarters, but more logically, they probably made no decisions for or against any transfer dealings allowing time to speak with Arteta.
However, it’s clear that the Spanish coach needs help, especially after the first half performance against Leeds and I have no doubts that there had been some dialogue prior to that result to identify possible targets.
